Bus Driver: Part-Time / Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY

The Transit Bus Driver, under the direction of the Deputy Director, will operate a van / bus to transport residents of Lee, Ogle, and rural Winnebago Counties of all ages safely and efficiently to assigned locations over designated routes. Effective July 1, 2026, RMTD’s service area will be expanding to include Whiteside County.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive a van / bus along scheduled routes providing passengers with curb-to-curb service to community resources.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices, assuring compliance with applicable traffic laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports regarding pre-trip / post-trip vehicle inspections, mileage, participant units, driving time, fuel purchases and other documentation as required.
  • Escort passengers with a disability according to established procedures.
  • Supervise client conduct during transportation to assure safe vehicle operations; instruct clients in various aspects of passenger and pedestrian safety and maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus. Ensure proper securement of all passengers.
  • Collects fares and answers questions about the bus route. Deliver fares to the office.
  • Communicates with the dispatcher via blue tooth cell when able to safety; provides updates to the dispatcher and reports emergencies, traffic patterns or accidents.
  • Assists passengers on and off the bus when help is needed.
  • Complete a pre / post inspection of the bus before beginning the day’s assigned route, complete paperwork, and maintain assigned van / bus in a clear and safe operating condition, as well as refueling.
  • Report any mechanical issues with the bus such as brakes, steering, or other issues.
  • Attends and participates in transportation safety and in-service workshops and meetings.
  • Participate in random drug screening, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate a bus safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Extensive knowledge of motor vehicle laws and regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service skills, using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle maintenance and the ability to diagnose mechanical problems.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Basic record keeping techniques.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a good driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must pass a drug (including alcohol) screening.
  • Prolonged periods of operating the bus.
  • Must be able to assist passengers when needed.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.

Auto Mechanic

POSITION SUMMARY

The Auto Mechanic is response for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of RMTD’s public transit fleet, including minivans, and ADA accessible buses. This position plays a critical role in ensuring passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and reliable service delivery in a rural demand-response transit environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform preventative maintenance on transit vehicles according to manufacturer and agency schedules.
  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, steering systems, and electrical systems.
  • Inspect and maintain wheelchair lifts / ramps and securement systems.
  • Conduct DOT pre-trip and post-trip inspection follow ups.
  • Respond to road calls and emergency mechanical situations when necessary.
  • Maintain heating, air conditioning, and safety systems.

INVENTORY & SHOP OPERATIONS

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and shop area in a clean and organized manner.
  • Monitor parts inventory and notify supervisor when supplies are needed.
  • Assist in tracking maintenance schedules and repair costs.
  • Support vehicle replacement planning by reporting recurring issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training in automotive repair preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of automotive or fleet maintenance experience preferred.
  • Experience with engines and medium duty vehicles preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Automotive Service Excellence certification preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and working under vehicles.
  • Ability to work in shop and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
