On July 1, 2024, a significant transition took place as LOTS became Reagan Mass Transit District (RMTD). While the name has changed, the mission remains the same: to provide affordable, accessible, and safe public transportation to those who depend on it. Now established as a local government entity, RMTD continues to embody its vision: “Moving Forward with You.”
This change reflects more than just a rebranding; it underscores a commitment to ensuring that public transit remains a vital resource for individuals and communities across its service area.
Connecting Communities Across 1,482 Square Miles
Reagan Mass Transit District serves residents across Lee and Ogle Counties, with transit buses traveling into DeKalb, Whiteside, and Winnebago Counties. Covering such a vast area allows RMTD to connect people to the places they need to go, whether it’s work, school, medical appointments, or community resources.
In fiscal year 2024 alone, RMTD provided 93,400 rides, covering an impressive 776,000 miles. This commitment to accessibility ensures that people of all ages and backgrounds have reliable transportation options.
A Lifeline for Daily Life
For many in the community, public transit is essential. Over the past year, nearly 45% of all rides provided by RMTD were work-related, highlighting its role in supporting employment opportunities. Other key services included transportation to medical appointments (13.8%) and educational institutions (12.2%).
Programs like Fare-Free Fourth Fridays make public transit even more accessible, offering free rides on the fourth Friday of every month. In 2024, this initiative provided over 2,027 free rides, giving more people the chance to experience the convenience of public transportation.
Expanding Beyond the Region
RMTD’s reach extends beyond its immediate service area through its management of two intercity Greyhound bus routes. These routes connect Chicago to Davenport, Iowa, via Interstate 88, and Chicago to Danville, Illinois. By facilitating these connections, RMTD helps residents access opportunities far beyond their local communities.
Supporting RMTD’s Mission
Public transportation is a cornerstone of community development, enabling access to jobs, education, healthcare, and essential services. However, operating such an extensive system requires funding. While 65% of RMTD’s operations are supported by federal and state funding, the remaining 35% must come from local contributions.
Community support is vital to bridging this funding gap and ensuring that RMTD can continue to serve those who depend on it.
How You Can Help
Your contributions can directly impact the lives of your neighbors. Consider supporting RMTD at one of these levels:
- $25: Sponsor 12 in-town round trips for an older adult.
- $250: Sponsor 25 out-of-town trips for a person with a disability.
- $500: Sponsor a semester’s worth of rides to school for a student.
- $1,500: Sponsor 100 round trips for a person commuting to work.
Every gift helps ensure that safe, reliable transportation remains accessible to everyone in our community. By supporting RMTD, you’re not just providing rides—you’re fostering independence, opportunity, and connection for those who need it most.
